A sound at the door
that nobody turns off

Eighteen hotels and resorts, arranged here by the one thing you hear on the ground they stand on. The sound is read from the place itself, from published material about it, and never from a night we claim to have spent there.

Every one of these hotels has a sound it cannot switch off.

We listen to a place because a building can be changed and its ground cannot. A waterfall, a canal, a rail corridor or a frozen lake was there before the hotel and will outlast the furniture. Reading a site that way keeps the description steady, and it keeps us out of the business of grading anyone. How we listen.
